A record, which has through the ages also been know as a gramophone record, phograph record or vinyl record is an analog sound storage medium. This is usually done with grooves in a spiral shape which stores the recorded sound. A needle is placed on the edge of the record, and as it makes its way into the centre of the record, the music is played.
The earliest forms of music were stored on record. Most of todays generation of music lovers will have grown up with CDs or MP3s, but prior to that records were the main form of music.
In the 50's and 60's there were records which played at 78rpm. These were eventually phased out and most record players fromthe 70's onwards played records at two different speeds, 45rpm and 33rpm.
45rpm records were normally 7 inch singles, which denoted the width of the vinyl record. The 33rpm speed was usually required when playing an album or extended version of a single, which were 12 inch in size.
