The most important thing you need to do when trying to get your band’s name out there, is to make sure you get the widest audience possible. Sounds obvious, but in today’s industry, it is getting harder and harder for unsigned bands to get themselves heard. Although advances in technology and the widespread use of social media has made it easy for bands to get their music to a potentially global audience, the sheer amount of artists all vying for the same people’s attention make it extremely difficult to stand out from the crowd.

Gigging is vital for underground bands

Because of this it is more important than ever for bands to tour and gig relentlessly – even in their home towns, particularly supporting credible, established bands. They should play as often as possible to ensure that people begin (or continue) to talk about them. Promoters are far more likely to be in touch about further bookings if they have seen the band live than if they are casually sent a link to the band’s bandcamp, facebook or myspace page, although of course, these are particularly useful.

When gigging, it is also advisable to have a CD to distribute to anyone who might be interested. CD Duplication is relatively inexpensive and can be done quickly and efficiently by specialist companies. Although this may not generate a lot of money for the band, it can be an invaluable promotional device as it will allow people to get a better feel for the music and help generate a fan base. It will also give the band an image of professionalism and can be given to any journalists, bloggers, label reps or promoters who might be in attendance on the night. This again can be hugely beneficial because it grants you access to wider audiences.

Obviously, there’s a lot more to be taken into consideration these days apart from recording a demo and sending it off to a label. People are increasingly interested in “artist platforms” – how many fans you have, what your target audience is and how well you market yourself is actually becoming more important than the way you sound. But if you’re savvy and use new technologies to supplement old techniques then there is no reason why your band can’t be a success.
