Vinyl Records

Before we downloaded music, before we listened to mp3 players, before CDs were the standard, before tapes entertained us we had vinyl records.

Before we relied on the digital revolution to provide new ways of listening to music, analogue was the only way and vinyl records filled that niche large flat discs (often anywhere between 7 and 12 inches wide) that would spin on a deck with a needle running over the top of it. The disc has grooves inscribed along it so that the needle can read information and subsequently play out music. They are known as vinyl records because they are made of polyvinyl chloride.

Despite the digital age, there are still those that use records to listen to or showcase music. DJs usually use records in clubs, which is why they are still popular in certain genres of music, including dance music and others. Collectors still like to own old records, possibly due to their monetary value (in the case of rare copies) and audiophiles' still prefer the sound of vinyl records over CDs and mp3.

Music is always evolving and changing, so soon any number of methods we have for listening to music could be replaced or moved aside just as the record once was.
